The origin of the Pengal family business dates back to 1915. Austrian imigrant Frank Pengal originally began the family business as a candy store, which was located two blocks from our current location.
Purchased by our Grandfather, Frank Pengal, in November, 1918, our current location has seen numerous remodelings and expansions since 1975. |
The Spring of 1983 saw the expansion of floor space and a new store front. This space now contains our candy and fudge shop. In the Spring of 1987, another major expansion took place, and that floor space now contains the area's largest imprinted and embroidered sportswear collection. During the Autumn of 1993, the second story was remodeled into retail space and our current storefront was unveiled. This retail space is now home to Northeast Minnesota's premier Nordic Ski Shop.
The original building that once contained groceries, general merchandise, and womens sportswear has returned to its original roots. Pengal's Basswood Trading Company now carries a variety of clothing, speciality food products and gift items that reflect the experience of the people living in and visiting this special area. Pengal's Basswood Trading Company is the area's oldest continuously operated famly business in the Ely, Minnesota area.
